2009-2010 Volunteer Crime Checks and Confidentiality Training

.

Crime check applications for the 2009-2010 school year are now being accepted at all Laurel County Public Schools. Volunteers are encouraged to complete these and turn them in to the schools before the school year ends. This ensures that the crime checks can be processed before summer break. Laurel County School Volunteers must have annual crime checks and also attend confidentiality training each year. Confidentiality training's will be offered in late summer/early fall for next school year. Watch for training dates in the local newspapers, TV bulletin boards and listen for them on the radio stations.

Remember your favorite school while Spring /Fall/ Winter Cleaning!

Donations to Goodwill may be made on behalf of any school in Laurel County. In cooperation with the Laurel County Family Resource Youth Services Centers, Goodwill assigns dollar credit to your designated school for the weight of your donation. The FRC's and YSC's distribute credit vouchers for needy families to shop at Goodwill. This is a great help to the families in Laurel County.

.

The only drawback is that tax deduction is forfeited when the donation is made on behalf of the school. Each individual must decide if they want a tax break for their donation or if they want to help Laurel County families with school aged children. Many who only have small amounts to donate throughout the year may not benefit much by tax deductions anyway, so they may wish to donate on behalf of a school. The FRC’s and YSC’s in Laurel County greatly appreciate this source of help for families.

COMMUNITY MEETINGS AND INFORMATION

.

                .

2nd Sunday is a program to promote physical activity in Kentucky and show policy makers that Kentucky needs more places for citizens to participate in physical activity such as walking trails, biking trails, etc.  in order to fight obesity in this state.  Almost every county in the state will be closing down a road on the 2nd Sunday of October (October 12th) in order to encourage people to come walk, bike, run, skate or skateboard without the fear of being hit by a car or their kids running out in traffic.  Laurel County has chosen to close down a ½ mile stretch downtown from 2-6 p.m. on Sunday, October 12th.  There will be educational booths on the courthouse steps where participants can register to win prizes such as FREE gas, bicycles, jump ropes and much more.  Impromptu exercise classes will be going on to demonstrate to participants what the class is like.  Physical activity games will be going on for kids at the courthouse and kids will have the opportunity to register for free prizes also.  Anyone is invited to participate in this FREE event.  For more information, please call the Laurel County Extension Office at 864-4167.
