South Laurel High School was established in 1992 when Laurel County High School was divided into two schools. Continuing in the rich tradition of its predecessor, South Laurel High School maintains a high standard of excellence in both academics and athletics and is one of the finest public schools in Kentucky. It has been the site for pilot programs for many academic advancements as well as being one of the first schools in the state to implement a School Based Decision Making Council. SLHS has scored well on the state assessment testing program and ranks as one of the best in the state for a large public school.
South Laurel’s athletic department is one of the best in the state. In the 2004-05 school year the girls volleyball, girls basketball, girls softball, boys soccer, and boys basketball all sent teams to the state tournament with the boys basketball team winning the state championship. No other public school in Kentucky attained that level of success.
