SLHS Fall Food Drive: November 3rd through 25th

Non-perishable food items can be dropped off in the YSC.  A suggested list of items can be found below.  Food collected will be given to SLHS families in need of food any time there is a need and especially for the two weeks of Christmas Break.  This will not be a contest, but students/faculty/staff are encouraged to give as they can in keeping with Rachel’s Challenge.  Also, students may receive up to 2 hours community service for bringing in 1 food item per 15 minutes (1=15 min, 4=1 hr, 8=2 hrs, maximum of 2 hrs).

  • Mac & Cheese
  • Crackers
  • Ramen Noodles
  • Instant Oatmeal Packets (in flavors)
  • Instant Soups
  • Boxed Cereal
  • Canned Fruits & Vegetables
  • Expiration Dates should be Spring 2015 or later
  • (out of date food will not be accepted)

 

 

Rachel’s Challenge

On April 20, 1999 a school shooting occurred at Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado and is noted as one of the most serious of a series of high profile spree shootings that have occurred since then. In addition to the shots fired, the complex and highly planned attack involved a fire bomb to divert firefighters, propane tanks converted to bombs placed in the cafeteria, 99 explosive devices, and bombs rigged in cars. The perpetrators, two senior students murdered a total of 12 students and one teacher. They injured 21 additional people, with three others being injured while attempting to escape the school. The pair then committed suicide. From this unspeakable tragedy has come suffering and pain, but at the same time, immeasurable good and a legacy of strength has also arisen and is still making a significant impact on young people across the country today.

Rachel Scott, a seventeen year old senior, was the first student killed at Columbine. Rachel left a legacy of reaching out to those who were different, who were picked on by others, or who were new at her school. Shortly before her death she wrote, "I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go." From her life and example, her family and friends have continued her legacy and on October 21st, courtesy of GEAR UP, they presented that message to students at both North and South Laurel High Schools.

The staff of Rachel’s Challenge told Rachel Scott’s story and challenged Laurel County students to pledge to follow the Five-step School Improvement Process that equips students and adults to create and sustain safe, caring and supportive learning environments essential for academic achievement. The steps are:

  • Look for the best in others
  • Treat others the way you want to be treated
  • Choose positive influences
  • Speak words of kindness
  • Forgive yourself and others

The students were allowed to sign a banner signifying their pledge to follow the five steps. SLHS Youth Services Center Coordinator Caprecia Sizemore commented as she watched students signing, “II have yet to hear a student say that it didn’t affect them or that they didn’t want to sign the banner. Many of them seemed very solemn as they were signing.”

Rachel’s Challenge was also presented to the community on the evening of October 21st at First Baptist Church.
