For over four decades, Johnson Elementary School has served the northeastern part of Laurel County by providing a stimulating learning environment for students. Located on McWhorter Road , the school consists of updated and expanded buildings situated on a beautiful campus. A tour of the campus includes stimulating classrooms, a large computer lab, a well-equipped library, a gymnasium, a modern cafeteria, and an outdoor classroom with a nature trail.
Johnson Elementary School's history began with the acquisition of land to the Laurel County School Board by the local Johnson family. The school was constructed on the site and named in the family's honor; and the doors were opened to the community to serve students in grades one through eight by first principal, Mr. Holbert Hodges, in 1962. Since that date, the school has enjoyed a positive continuity of its mission by the principals and other staff members. In fact, only five other principals, Mr. Roy Tincher (1970-1982), Mrs. Willa Reams (1982-2003), Mr. Tharon Hurley (2003-2007), Mr. Randy Leger (2007-2008), and Mr. Tyler McWhorter (Present), have served the school. As the population of the area increased, more schools were added, and Johnson became a school for kindergarten through fifth grade students.
Academic achievement is a major focus of the school. Students receive a wide variety of instruction and learning opportunities for literacy, math, science, humanities, and practical living. All students are expected and encouraged to learn. In fact, the Johnson 2005 Academic Team won the county competition.
Johnson Elementary School thrives because of the students, the community support, and the dedicated staff members who strive for continuous improvement. Diligent delivery of quality programs and instruction, and the rapport of the staff and students have built a positive climate where students find acceptance and challenges. Johnson Elementary School is a warm, inviting place where young minds continue to receive the foundations for lifetimes of learning.
