Home Correspondence Instruction (HCI) and School Closure FAQ


Laurel County Public Schools are committed to providing the best quality of educational services and taking steps to help ensure the safety and health of our students and staff.  We know during this uncertain time that you may have questions.  For this reason, we have created this FAQ to frequently asked questions.  Please understand that answers can change as guidance and recommendations by federal, state, and local government continues to evolve.   
Q:  When is the last day of school? 
A:  The last day of school for students will be Thursday, May 14, 2020.   
Q:  Should my child complete HCI assignments and lessons?  
A:  Yes. Your child should complete their Home Correspondence Instruction packet/online assignments.  Students will receive grades and feedback for their completed work.  Due dates for student assignments are listed on each teacher website. 
Q.  Are teachers available to assist my child during Home Correspondence Instruction (HCI)? 
A:  Yes.  Teachers will be available to answer questions from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm, Mondays – Fridays during HCI.  Teacher websites include contact information, HCI assignments, and instruction.  Please check your child’s teacher website regularly for detailed up-to-date information.  Also, you may contact your child’s school if you have any other questions. 
Q:  Will students be required to make-up HCI days? 
A:  No. HCI days count as student instructional days.   
Q:  Are we applying for Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI)? 
A:   Yes. The Laurel County Board of Education has applied for and been approved by KDE for temporary Nontraditional Instruction due to current statewide school closure.   
Q:  Is Food Service available for students during HCI? 
A:  Yes. To-Go pick-up breakfasts and lunches will be available to students on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  Curbside service will be set-up outside of each school for pickup.  Look for signage directing you to the pickup location. Breakfast and lunch meals can be picked up at the same time.  Parents may pick-up for more than one child at one location, even if a child attends a different school.  There is no cost for these meals.  
Breakfast and Lunch will be available for pickup from 7:30 am - 8:30 am 
Lunch/Breakfast will be available for pickup from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm 
Q:  My family is facing food insecurity, whom should I call? 
A:  Please contact your child’s Family Resource Center for information about resources available for assistance. 
Q:  What about athletics, extracurricular activities, and student travel? 
A:  The KHSAA has placed all school athletics under a dead period at this time.  During this time, there will be no team practices and school athletic facilities are not to be used.  
All student travel, extracurricular activities, and school-related events are suspended until further notice. 
We encourage everyone to follow the guidelines that the Center for Disease Control has recommended.  Laurel County School and District websites will be updated regularly, and official communication will also be provided through School Messenger Calls and the Laurel County School app.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child’s school or the Laurel County Central Office at 862-4600.
