As the new school year starts off, I want to say that Agriculture classes this year are packed with exciting projects, hands-on learning experiences, wonderful personal growth opportunities, and leadership development through the North Laurel FFA.

As Agriculture Teacher and one of the FFA Advisors, I am extremely excited about the events and activities planned for the 2012-2013 school year. Students enrolled in Agriculture classes have the opportunity recieve college credit through the KOSSA (Kentucky Occupational Skill Standards Assessment) Exams, and gain great leadership skills through the largest student organization in the nation; the FFA.

Students are required to complete 25 hrs in an out-of-class project of their choice called a SAE project over the duration of the semester. This project allows students to apply skills learned within class to "real-life" experiences in their project duties. The "Supervised Agricultural Experience Project" can be described as Lawn Care, Home and Community Development, Small Animal Care, Large Animal Care, Community Service, average after schoool jobs, all involving the student performing Agriculture related work while applying skills learned in class each day.

FFA dues are $20.00 for the school year and can be paid at any time to Mrs. Cornett (the other Ag Teacher) or myself. Students must be enrolled in an Agriculture class sometime during the school year and the North Laurel FFA will meet once every month. The first club meeting will be Wednesday September 5th. FFA provides students a place to showcase what they have learned in class through competitions, Agriscience fairs. Expos, and University Field Days. The FFA is a great opportunity for students and we encourage them to join, however it is not mandatory
