"We are the Music Makers,
And we are the Dreamers of Dreams.
Yet we are the Movers and Shakers,
Of the World forever, it seems!"
     - Arthur O'Shaughnessy

Hi!  Welcome to my page!  I'm Jon M. Oliver, the Music Specialist at Hunter Hills Elementary.  I'm a native of London.  I was born and raised right here in this community.  I attended Hazel Green Elementary, Laurel County Junior High (now SLMS), and Laurel County High School (now SLHS).  I received my Associate of Arts degree from Sue Bennett College, a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Music with a specialization in Vocal Performance and a minor in Business Administration from Union College, a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from Union College, and a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Eastern Kentucky University.  I also have graduate hours through the University of Kentucky and the Kentucky Institute for International Studies.  I spent two semesters living in Salzburg, Austria while completing my Masters degree.  I taught one year in private school before coming to work for Laurel County Schools as a Music Specialist.  I started out working at Colony, Felts, Keavy, and Lily Elementary Schools before coming to work at Hunter Hills where I have taught since the doors opened - 26 years!  Overall, this is my 31st year in the classroom!

I believe in service, and I have tried to be of service to both my students and my profession.  I have served in various roles and positions with the Kentucky Music Educators Association, the Southeastern Kentucky Music Association, the Kentucky Department of Education, the Fine Arts Association of Southeastern Kentucky, the London Community Orchestra, Quaver's Marvelous World of Music, and others.  I also believe in practicing what you preach and that teachers don't just teach, that they also do.  And so, I have stayed active as a musician and performer myself.  After all these years, I'm still playing for my high school band director, Mr. Walker, as a percussionist in the London Community Orchestra and the London Community Band.  I also sing with the Southeast Kentucky Community Chorus and perform as a vocalist around the region.

I believe that music is an integral part of the human experience.  I believe learning about music is part of being a well-rounded and well-educated human being.  I believe that all students can grow to have an appreciation of, a love of, and a knowledge of music which can last them throughout their lives.  I also believe that all students deserve to find their passion and their purpose, and that for many of them, that may be music, even if it's nothing more than a lifelong love.  Furthermore, I believe in Cheryl Lavender's quote which says, "The fact that children can make beautiful music is less significant than the fact that music can make beautiful children!"

Take a look around, and let me know if you have any questions!  I'll be adding more resources in the days to come!
