This class is designed to introduce students to three of the major components of the social studies: government, economics, and geography. Throughout the government portion of the course, students will be taught a variety of topics, such as: the basic foundations of government, citizenship, the three major branches of government and their roles, and the creation and lasting importance of the Constitution. The economics portion of the class will seek to teach students economic decision-making, types of economies, money management, and career planning. Finally, the geography portion of the course will introduce students to the various regions of the world, their climate patterns, and cultural differences.
In order to graduate, high school students must pass a 100 question citizenship exam. At NLHS, students take this exam in Civics during their freshman year. https://education.ky.gov/curriculum/conpro/socstud/Pages/citizenshipassessment.aspx
