As a native of Laurel County and a 1998 graduate of North Laurel High School, I am very proud to call myself a "Jaguar."  In 1998, I moved to Rowan County, Ky and attended Morehead State University, where I obtained my Bachelor's Degree in English with an emphasis in Secondary Education. While at Morehead State, I was priveleged to cheer on their infamous co-ed cheerleading squad. My educational and cheerleading experiences at Morehead are some of my most cherished memories.
After graduating in 2003, I accepted my first teaching (and cheerleading coaching) job in West Liberty, Ky. I feel as though this first teaching experience mentally prepared me for the job of "teaching" altogether. I learned so much there, and after completing my Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from Union College, I decided it was time to move back to where I came from.
In 2006, I accepted the English teaching position here at North Laurel High School and have since made a home here. In my heart, I have always been a "blue" and "green" Jaguar. I feel honored to work with the students of Laurel County each day and I hope to inspire them to set dreams, achieve goals, and become "lifelong learners."
Any student who comes into my classroom will find themselves engrossed in rigor and structure as my practices reflect three elements I believe are conducive to establishing such an environment: 1) the teacher acting as a guide, 2) allowing the student's natural curiosity to direct his/her learning, and 3) promoting respect for education and all people. Equally important to self discovery is having an opportunity to study things that are meaningful to one's life and interests; especially in the 21st century American workforce. Therefore, I center my content around literature that, I hope, fosters students' interests and stimulates their passion to learn.
I believe that each student is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow emotionally, intellectually, and socially. It is my desire as an educator to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites a sharing of ideas. I believe when students are allowed space for individual discovery and construction of knowledge to occur, that life-long learners are created. In our competitive society, it is crucial for today's students to not only recieve a solid education, but to be completely prepared for the world and its harsh realities that await them upon graduation from high school. I enter my classroom with the awareness that it isn't just about reading and writing and interactive notebooks; it is also about communication skills, study skills, and social skills. Everyday, I diligently strive to instill that education in my students.

"The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows." Syndey J. Harris
