Laurel County Public Schools is pleased to announce that Tharon Hurley has been named Deputy Superintendent after serving as Assistant Superintendent since 2019.

As Assistant Superintendent, Mr. Hurley oversaw transportation, assessment, and accountability, coordinated School-Based Decision-Making Council regulations, as well as Safe Schools/School Police and District Athletics, among other duties.

A Laurel County native and 1988 graduate, Mr. Hurley brings 28 years of educational experience to his new role. He began his career as a teacher and then left the classroom to become a guidance counselor, then later as principal before moving to a district leadership role. This experience provided him with great insight into student achievement and fiscal management prior to becoming Assistant Superintendent and then Deputy Superintendent.

Mr. Hurley stated, “I am grateful for this new opportunity to continue to serve Laurel County students and staff, and for the confidence placed in me by Mrs. Griebel. It is an honor to continue to partner in building upon the accomplishments in and out of the classroom that have made Laurel County Schools both innovative and successful.”

Mr. Hurley received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education at Eastern Kentucky University, where he later completed a Master of Arts degree in counseling, then Rank I certification in School Administration along with Supervisor of Instruction, Pupil Personnel, and Superintendent.
