Laurel County Public Schools recently hosted Kentucky Secretary of State Michael Adams and representatives from the Cumberland Valley Area Development District (CVADD) for an engaging, student-led look at education.

The visit to the Laurel County Schools Center for Innovation (CFI) showcased the district's commitment to career readiness and collaborative education. The program opened with Superintendent Denise M. Griebel, who detailed the CFI’s history and the Laurel County Board of Education's vision for the facility.

Notably, the Laurel County Schools Center for Innovation is unique among Career and Technical Education (CTE) schools in Kentucky, as it is solely funded through the Laurel County Board of Education and local tax dollars, a testament to the community’s investment in its youth.

During the presentation, CFI Principal Kate Ray highlighted the CFI’s growth, explaining the enrollment process and how community feedback directly shapes the curriculum to meet workforce demands. Attendees also viewed a student-produced video providing an overview of the diverse career pathways available.

The collaborative nature of Laurel County’s education system was a focal point. Dr. Jeremy Kidd, Principal of South Laurel High School, and Jamie Davis, Principal of North Laurel High School, discussed how the partnership among the three schools expands opportunities for all students.

Student-Led Exploration

The highlight of the visit was a tour led by CFI Student Ambassadors. Guests received a firsthand look at the CFI’s specialized programs of study, including:

  • Biomedical Sciences and Technology

  • Engineering Technology

  • Pre-Nursing

  • Industrial Maintenance Technology

  • Media Arts

  • Navy JROTC

  • Teaching and Learning

The tour concluded at the McDaniel Learning Center, also housed within the CFI complex. Principal Jaline Jackson shared the history of this unique, non-traditional program, explaining how its flexible format supports students who may face life challenges that make a traditional high school setting difficult.

“We were honored to showcase our students’ authentic learning experiences for Secretary Adams. The Center for Innovation exemplifies the Laurel County Board of Education’s dedication to student success, empowering students to explore, excel, and achieve,” remarked Superintendent Denise M. Griebel. “We sincerely appreciate the CVADD for coordinating this visit. Secretary Adams’ genuine attention and meaningful engagement with our students and staff truly affirmed the great work we accomplish in our schools every day.”
