Today, a South Laurel Middle School student brought a handgun to school, initiating a lockdown at both South Laurel Middle and South Laurel High Schools. The student in possession of this weapon had no intention of harming their classmates, staff, or themselves. Within minutes of the initial report, the weapon was found to be unloaded, and no ammunition or magazines were found at school. Therefore, no students were ever in danger. The handgun was quickly removed by South Laure Middle School administration and the Laurel County Public Schools Police Department. Appropriate disciplinary and legal actions were taken. Normal school activities have resumed, and all students and staff are safe.
While we strive to communicate with you as quickly as possible, our immediate priority during the event was the safety of our students and staff, the security of the building, and the accuracy of the facts.
Laurel County Public Schools' number one priority is to provide our students and staff with a safe environment that enables them to learn and achieve their goals. Please help us keep our schools safe by reinforcing with your child the importance of reporting any potential dangers at school to an adult or law enforcement.
