Friend of Education Award
CommonSpirit Saint Joseph Hospital-London was honored with the Friend of Education award for its community involvement and district contributions.
Eddie the Eagle Safety Program: Through a partnership with the hospital since 2023, Laurel County elementary students receive an interactive assembly program on firearm awareness, teaching young students four essential action steps if they encounter a firearm: Stop, Don't Touch, Run away, and Tell a grown-up. Eddie the Eagle demonstrated the steps for the audience and board members. Jara Burkhart, Violence Prevention Coordinator for CommonSpirit Saint Joseph Hospital-London, Eddie the Eagle, and Brittany Lake, Violence Prevention Assistant, accepted the recognition.
Sports Medicine: CommonSpirit Saint Joseph Hospital- London has also been the official sports medicine provider for both North and South Laurel Athletics since 2023. These trainers provide immediate aid by assessing injuries and working directly with the medical provider, Orthopedic Specialist Dr. Kevin Magone, or any provider treating an athlete for return-to-play, treatment, and/or therapy plans. Through their care and consistent support, each trainer has become an integral part of the teams they serve and, ultimately, a member of the Jaguar Nation or South Laurel Family. Dr. Magone serves both North and South Laurel and is also very familiar and helpful to our students and families. Jada Rice is the ATC for South, and Jordan Marcum is the ATC for North. Mr. John Jones, Supervisor of Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine Services, with CommonSpirit Saint Joseph Hospital-London, accepted the recognition.
America’s Healthiest Schools: South Laurel High School achieved national recognition from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation as one of America’s Healthiest Schools. Led by health teacher Ashley Deaton, this honor marks the third consecutive year the school has received national recognition for its exemplary health and wellness environment.
FFA National 3-Star Rating: The South Laurel High School FFA Chapter earned a top-tier National 3-Star Rating, placing it among an elite group of only 14 FFA chapters across Kentucky to achieve this recognition. Under the guidance of advisors Jason McWhorter and Dustin Johnson, the chapter earned its second consecutive year of 3-star status.
