Laurel County Public Schools extends its sincere appreciation to the London-Laurel Chamber of Commerce for hosting ribbon-cutting ceremonies last week at the new auxiliary gymnasiums at South Laurel High School and North Laurel High School.
The events provided local media and business leaders a firsthand look at these state-of-the-art facilities and the district’s ongoing commitment to student success. Following the ceremonies, South Laurel Athletic Director Jep Irwin and North Laurel Athletic Director David Bullard led guided tours and answered questions regarding the new facilities.
While both facilities were built from the same prefabricated metal building plan, they were designed specifically to each school’s needs, with input from school administrators, athletic directors, and coaches from initial planning through completion. Each gymnasium features full basketball and volleyball courts, indoor turf for field sports, retractable batting cages, and dedicated locker rooms. Beyond athletics, cheer and dance, the versatile spaces function as flexible accommodations for fine arts and band rehearsals, as well as supplemental classroom instructional space.
Funded largely through federal ESSER funds to create versatile indoor environments, these gymnasiums represent a dynamic, long-term investment in the education, health, and well-being of all Laurel County students. Laurel County students are already actively utilizing the facilities, with strong positive feedback from both students and school leadership.
